What Chinese tourists say about Japan on RedNote: seven public reports (Osaka, Kyoto, Hokkaido, Fukuoka, Okinawa, onsen, tax-free shopping)

Short answer: On 2026-11-06 we searched RedNote (Xiaohongshu) for seven Japan travel topics the way a Chinese traveller would, read the 3–5 most-engaged notes on each in full, and had one comparison written per topic. The reports are public, in Japanese, at /ja/report; this page is the English companion — what each run read, what it cost, and what the notes say. Each run cost 5–12 credits and took 32–158 seconds.

Disclosure: LinkDigest is the author's own service. Every figure is from those runs; quotes are the notes' own words.

The seven runs

Osaka — food 大阪 美食 攻略 5 5 132 215 likes
Kyoto — where to stay 京都 住宿 攻略 5 11 158 286 likes
Hokkaido — winter 北海道 冬季 旅游 攻略 3 5 32 207 likes
Fukuoka 福冈 旅游 攻略 5 12 105 270 likes
Okinawa 冲绳 旅游 攻略 3 5 85 311 likes
Onsen 日本 温泉 攻略 4 5 53 483 likes
Tax-free shopping 日本 免税 购物 攻略 4 5 43 293 likes

Credits: a search that finds notes is 4, the comparison 1, and each note read fresh 1–3 (images and video minutes); several notes had already been read earlier that night, so they came from the cache free — which is why a five-note run can show 5 credits.

What the notes say

Osaka, food. Four of five notes are store-by-store: a new omurice place three minutes from Shinsaibashi station, a 20-year-old kappo in Kitashinchi, an eel bowl near Namba. Four of five give prices and opening hours (“梅田蓝天大厦成人门票1500日元”, “营业时间11:00-15:00 / 17:00-22:00”); the comparison notes the notes lean on “儀式感” and “本場の味” and that saves run high.

Kyoto, where to stay. Season-led itineraries (four of five), location-first lodging (“河原町站2分钟”, “JR二条站步行5分钟”), and budget tips — one note says buying wagyu at Nishiki market and cooking it saved half the food budget. Two notes open with “抄作业” (“copy my homework”), the standard hook for a ready-made plan.

Hokkaido, winter. All three notes are timelines: “15:15 上山” for Mount Hakodate's blue hour, “08:30|从札幌站出发” for a Bibai snow day. The recurring advice is crowd avoidance and transport timing (“特急列车建议提前划指定席”), and one note says plainly: for Biei without a car, take the day tour.

Fukuoka. The most-liked note (270) is about 2026 policy changes — accommodation tax, tax-free limits, the VJW QR code for entry — written as “7个新变化别踩坑” (seven changes, don't trip). The rest: Tenjin shops, a pudding ice-cream, a 12-hour Beppu plan “全程不排队”, and a Japanese-speaking private charter sold as “解放双手和时间”. Objections in the comments: queues and extra costs.

Okinawa. Miyakojima activities (“野生海龟一起浮潜”, transparent SUP, “不会游泳也可参与”), cool-summer alternatives on the main islands, and a Naha hotel judged “性价比超高”. The comment section asks practical things — currency of a price, whether the room has a kettle.

Onsen. Comparisons and verdicts: Beppu's seven hells rated (“海地狱最佳,必去!”), Nyuto's Tsurunoyu main vs annex (“别馆体验好太多了”), a Kyoto ryokan “根本舍不得离开”. The shared wants are privacy and no crowds (“无需拼团,只和亲友同行”).

Tax-free shopping. A TOP-5 souvenir list with “价格+地址+日文名”, a department-store guide after five Tokyo trips, a 95% Alipay coupon at a Matsumoto Kiyoshi in Osaka, and etiquette reminders (“不要浪费食物”). Readers want prices, places and trouble-avoidance.

Why this matters for a Japanese business

Chinese arrivals to Japan fell 56% in the first half of 2026 (訪日ラボ, 2026-08-19), so the visitors who still come plan harder — and they plan on RedNote. A shop, a ryokan or a DMO can run the same search on its own name or area: the Japanese form is at /ja/shindan, the English console at /app. Reading is free to try (10 credits on sign-up) and needs no Chinese account.

What these reports are not

  • Not a survey. Each report reads the 3–5 most-engaged public notes a web search found for one query on one day.
  • Not RedNote's ranking. Our search, our read, our ranking (likes + 2 × saves + comments).
  • Not the full comment thread — the top comments the share page embeds, at most five per note.
